‘To research’, ‘try to determine’,‘seek for’ – the meaning of the Italian verb ‘ricercare’ reveals the passion involved in discovering early music, the care taken in its adaptation and the pleasure of presenting previously buried treasures to the public.
Musica Ricercata’s current repertoire comprises 682 works. Their database provides information on 73 works for the 16th century alone, excluding those in their current programme.
Renditions of the early vocal and instrumental music, which resounded throughout the churches, courtyards and streets of Florence and other culturally significant places in Europe, take the ensemble almost naturally to the places where history is conserved, to the museums. Musica Ricercata specialises in working with museums and galleries of old masters. Their programmes make direct reference to the historical context of the exhibits, in a mysterious way reproducing the beholder’s impressions. The ensemble brings together internationally renowned soloists who work in Florence and play historical instruments. With their succinct presentations they render their programme accessible to their audiences. Outstanding singers perform the vocal pieces in the distinctive soprano and countertenor registers, the timbres of which fill the room with entrancing beauty.
